Don’t Self Sabotage

People hate change.

I’ve met with so many people who tell me they are desperate for change, that they NEED to get healthy, but end up always self-sabotaging themselves in the process. This was mind-blowing to me until I realized a very important concept about human psychology.

Self-sabotage is your subconscious way of protecting yourself.

I know this sounds crazy, but this is the way the human brain is designed. The brain hates change and it thrives in a constant internal environment called homeostasis. As long as your subconscious believes that you are safer being out-of-shape then you’ll be stuck. Frustrating, right?

Don’t give up just yet. The good news is I’ve coached clients around this struggle by identifying their subconscious fears and formulating a plan for success around whatever they feel is holding them back. Let’s start digging around your reasons.

Do you believe…Your comfortable? Being comfortable with where you are today could be the reason that you sabotage your efforts to improve your life through change. Change is scary and so is uncertainty. Your comfort zone is only holding you back from where you truly want to be. Being uncomfortable is the catalyst you need for growth. The lobster sheds it’s shell only from applying intense pressure until it eventually grows and expands. Be like the lobster and thrive and grow in uncertainty and pressure.

Do you believe…Success will bring loss? If you met your weight loss goal, would it bring out resentment and jealousy in your friends and family? You are who you hang out with. Build the support system you need around you to be successful. Are you having lunch with the co-worker who always mocks you for attempting to be healthy again? Or, are you partnering up with an empowering friend to go for a walk on your breaks and share meal prepping tips with? If you feel like you don’t have that support system reach out to me directly!

Do you believe…You’re not capable? Are you unable to imagine yourself at your goal weight? Does the possibility of achieving your goal not seem so far fetched you can’t even fathom it? Honestly, some times you have to fake it to make it. I was horrible at speaking in front of groups of people. I was paralyzed with fear. Then, I started telling myself how good I was at speaking in front of groups and I forced my brain to visualize myself as being successful when presenting. You know what happened? I ended up becoming really good at it over time. Watch my video on Goal Setting to get started.

I want you to start every day by visualizing you achieving your goals. Really sit there and force yourself to see it. I know this will be hard and uncomfortable at first, but eventually your brain will adapt and see the success. You may even have to “fake” it at first and that’s ok. Eventually over time your body will follow.

Once your whole mind is primed for success, then nothing will be able to stop you.
